The Ghana 2008 fever which has gripped the nation is believed to have claimed the lives of four persons last Saturday at Kaneshie in Accra when the brakes of a Benz 207 bus failed the driver.

The victims, hawkers of Ghana 2008 paraphernalia, were crushed to death when the bus with registration number GS 7807 Y hit them.

Thirteen other street hawkers were injured in the accident involving several vehicles at the Kaneshie First Light, on the Accra-Winneba road, an eyewitness said.

The accident seemed to have confirmed the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA’s) fears that street trading was dangerous.

According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred at exactly 11.23am at the ‘First Light Junction’ as the bus, heading towards Accra from Kasoa at top speed, skidded onto the pavement, knocking the first hawker selling Ghana flags, and hitting a BMW saloon car, which also jammed two other cars.

Sources told DAILY GUIDE that the passengers on board the Benz bus from Kasoa, upon realizing that the bus was having problems with its brakes, all alighted when they got to Darkuman Junction.

The bus, it was reported, developed a brake problem from Mallam Junction and passengers pleaded with the driver to stop and solve the problem but their pleas fell on deaf ears, so all the passengers got down at Darkuman Junction.

As fate would have it, minutes after they had all alighted, the bus, now being occupied by the driver and his mate only, got involved in the accident.

While some of the victims died instantly, others passed away later at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital. Some of the injured were said to be in serious condition.

The Odorkor Police have confirmed the incident and are making efforts to apprehend the driver of the Benz bus, who took to his heels immediately after the accident.

In a related development, at the broadcasting junction on the Kasoa-Weija road, a tipper truck was also involved in an accident which left five people injured with two in very critical condition.

The injured have since been taken to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.
