EC investigates Mills’ complaints over ‘bloated voters’ register |
|
Mr. Samuel Yorke Aidoo, the Head of Research of the Electoral Commission says ‘very interesting’ responses are coming in from the Commission’s Ashanti Regional offices that require thorough investigations. |
He made the comment on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show when called over allegations by National Democratic Congress presidential candidate, Prof John Evans Atta Mills that the Voters’ Register particularly in the region could be bloated.
Professor John Atta Mills consequently warned that he will not accept the December elections results if the allegations were not investigated.
Mills had alleged at a durbar at Cape Coast from where he began a nationwide campaign tour that the register was over bloated in 13 constituencies in the Ashanti Region and explained that the figures in the 13 constituencies were so outrageous that there was the need for the matter to be investigated.
But Mr. Yorke Aidoo, who assured that the Commission’s records were intact, told show host Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah that the allegations by Prof. Mills were particularly serious and could not be dismissed without being investigated.
“…The records are available, we cannot change our records and we need to cross-check because I have been talking to Ashanti and what they are also saying seems to be very interesting so we need to do further investigations so that we get to the bottom of the issue.”
Asked if the EC was not convinced of its own records hence the need for the investigations, he said far from being unsure, there was every need for the EC to satisfy itself that nothing untoward had been done.
“We need to satisfy ourselves, you cannot just rush and come to the public place to give pronouncements when you are not very certain about what the situation is. So we need to exercise restraint and the truth will at the end of the day come out and we will explain exactly what happened.” |
