Akufo-Addo to outdoor campaign team today |
 |
The presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will today outdoor his campaign team at the party's national headquarters, Asylum Down, Accra. |
Investigations undertaken by this paper indicate there are likely to be eight committees in all, each headed by a seasoned member of the party, including some former aspirants in the NPP's flagbearer race last December.
Such party stalwarts as former two-term General Secretary Dan Kwaku Botwe, Campaign Chairman for President Kufuor’s double presidential victories, Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey, former Trade Minister and runner up in the NPP flagbearer race Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, former aspirants Kobina Arthur Kennedy, Hackman Owusu-Agyemang have all been mentioned as either heading or playing key roles in the committees.
Dr Arthur Kennedy is expected to head the Communications Committee, with 'General’ Dan Botwe, who was field marshal for the NPP’s back to back electoral victories in 2000 and 2004, expected to head the Elections Committee.
Nich Adi-Dako has been pencilled in as head of the Operations and Logistics Committee, our sources say, while Victor Newman is expected to head the Research Committee.
First NPP National Treasurer Hackman Owusu-Agyemang is likely to head the Finance Committee, while Dr Owusu Akoto heads the Manifesto Committee.
Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey is expected to wave his magic wand again as Campaign Chairman, with Kofi Konadu Apraku pencilled in as Campaign Director, to be assisted by two Deputy Directors, one each for the northern and southern sectors.
As at press time, discussions were still ongoing on who to appoint Deputy Director for the northern sector, although either Stephen Ayesu Ntim or Prince Imoro Andani had been touted as likely to get the position. Similarly, no one had been chosen for the southern sector, although former Deputy Western regional Minister Sophia Horner-Sam was said to be in the running.
A special committee, the Special Interests Committee, will be headed by former Trade Minister Alan Kyerematen, our sources say. This committee will be responsible for liaising with such stakeholder bodies as the Trades Union Congress, Ghana Journalists Association, Ghana national Association of Teachers, National Association of Graduate Teachers and other players in the education sector, retired footballers, musicians, among others to help formulate policies that will be incorporated into the national agenda.
Nana Akufo-Addo will also use the occasion to outline the areas that will receive the greatest attention under his presidency, after the successes of the Kufuor administration, when he is sworn into office on January 7, 2009.
These include strengthening democracy and good governance; transforming and modernising Ghana’s economy through greater use of science and technology; and leading the West African integration effort and the Pan African agenda.
The NPP presidential candidate is expected to mount a vigorous defence of the achievements of the Kufuor administration as more than enough reason for Ghanaians to give the NPP another eight-year term of office.
According to our sources, the presentation will be "very detailed," with facts and figures, on how the NPP has managed the affairs of state for the good of all, and will include such information as the total number of hospital beds provided, kilometres of road constructed and the policies implemented.
