The Democratic Freedom Party (DFP) goes to congress on April 4 to choose its flag bearer for the forthcoming presidential election.
The announcement, which has put an end to speculations about whether the party was going to contest this year’s polls, adds that the historical event takes place between 4th and 5th April at the Accra Polytechnic.

The disclosure was contained in a release signed by a Deputy General Secretary of the party, John Amekah who added that the decision was taken at a meeting held on 12th March, 2008.

The congress will also choose national officers to steer the affairs of the party.

The national delegates’ congress themed “Restoring National Hope And Confidence” is coming at the heels of an unfulfilled one scheduled for March 14th 2008.

The earlier programme could not come on because of the CAN 2008 soccer fiesta, according to the release which added that the tournament affected the academic calendar of most tertiary institutions “thereby necessitating a postponement to enable the party to find other alternative and suitable arrangements for both the venue of the congress and accommodation for the delegates.”

Nomination forms for contestants of both presidential and national offices are available at the national secretariat and regional offices throughout the country, according to the release.

The party assures Ghanaians and its teeming supporters in particular “that the party is as vibrant as ever, and is poised to contest the 2008 elections and to make a huge impact on the Ghanaian political scene.”

The DFP was formed when National Democratic Congress (NDC) members resigned from the party following a riotous congress in Koforidua.

At the congress, supporters of the man who vied for re-election as National Chairman of the party, Dr. Obed Asamoah escaped death when he was targeted by hired thugs brought to the venue of the congress.

Ms. Frances Asiam, was one of the supporters of Dr. Asamoah who suffered physical torture at the hands of the thugs.

Things had started falling apart in the relationship between Dr. Asamoah and his buddy, Mr. Jerry Rawlings earlier than the ill-fated Koforidua congress which turned out to be the last straw to break the camel’s back, leading to the breakaway of the disgruntled group to form DFP.

The congress would be a test of the democratic credentials of the DFP, being the party’s first major media attracting activity.

Even though Obed is said to have turned down suggestions to be the party’s flag bearer, word has reached DAILY GUIDE that pressure is being mounted by some members that he rescinds his decision.
