Barely two weeks after he was named as Chairman of the New Patriotic Party's Election '08 Campaign Team, Jake Otanka Obetsebi-Lamptey has hit the campaign trail, taking his party's message to the Volta Region, traditionally seen as the stronghold of the opposition National Democratic Congress.
Addressing a durbar and fundraising rally of the chiefs and people of Amedzofe, President Kufuor’s two-time Campaign Manager called on the electorate to critically analyse the records of the NPP and the NDC and make an informed choice on the direction they want the nation to take after the firm foundation laid by the Kufuor administration.

The former Tourism Minister said despite the region being seen as not very receptive in the past to the NPP message, indications are that this tide is turning, with the party increasing its share of the popular vote in previous elections.

The Volta Region, he stressed, is very crucial to the development of the nation, and it is important that it be seen to play a major part in choosing the country’s next leader, most likely the Presidential Candidate of the NPP, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

Mr Obetsebi-Lamptey stated that given his wide experience and exposure, Nana Akufo-Addo was more than capable of leading the nation to higher heights. Ghana, he continued, continues to receive international attention and acclaim, and therefore needs a leader who can rub shoulders with the leaders of the world.

He said the interests of the nation lie in the very core of the heart of the NPP for which reason its flag bearer has always pledged to place Ghana in the forefront of continental affairs by upgrading its star status and lifting it into a middle income level.

He noted that within seven years of being in control of the nation’s affairs, the NPP government has brought Ghana out of the doldrums to a point where it is the envy of other countries the world over because of the relative peace and tranquillity she continues to enjoy.

He contended that the numerous development projects initiated by the Kufuor administration is an indication of the fact that there is a wise leadership that took bold decisions which he said have brought hope to the people.

He therefore called on Ghanaians to vote for Nana Akufo-Addo, who he believes is the ideal person to take over from President Kufuor to continue the country’s socio-economic progress.

Mr Obetsebi-Lamptey pointed out that life is all about community development, and that the community could never be developed without good leadership, saying that in many developed areas there were such leadership.

Mr. Obetsebi-Lamptey, who was Guest of Honour at the durbar, noted: "If Ghana’s democracy is going to work, then all the people must get involved. We can not turn our back to it and cannot afford to leave it to others to do. It is a job to be done by all, and to be involved is more than just voting."

"I will be doing a disservice if I do not bring to your attention the credentials of Nana Akufo-Addo to recommend him to you as your preferred choice when it comes to the elections in December. I believe when I look at the progress that Ghana has made under President Kufuor, and the person most fit in building on the foundation is Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo", he said.

The Campaign Chairman stated that the party under the leadership of Nana Akufo-Addo has very good plans for the Volta Region and urged them to vote massively to retain it in power at this year’s general elections so that the vision of the party for the region would be fully experienced.

Mr Obetsebi-Lamptey indicated that Ghana’s reputation as one of the most peaceful countries in the sub- region over the last seven years should also serve as a testimony for Ghanaians to retain the government in power.

He debunked opposition propaganda that the NPP was Akan-centred, pointing out that the campaign team is made of matured politicians from all ethnic backgrounds who would conduct their campaign in a peaceful atmosphere devoid of insults, rancour and acrimony.

The Senior Divisional Chief of the Avatime Traditional Area and Chief of Amedzofe, Okusie Akyem Foli V, called for greater unity among the people in order to develop the area.

He assured the NPP that the region would carefully consider the records of all the parties and vote for the one with the most development-oriented agenda.

He urged the party supporters to avoid complacency and work harder to ensure a massive win in both the Presidential and Parliamentary elections.

Mr. Obetsebi-Lamptey and five citizens of Amedzofe were later honoured for their tremendous contributions to the community.
