A court action brought against the Attorney General and Minister of Justice by the Legal Resources Centre and the Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative to produce in person to court Chucider Lawrence, a Liberian refugee has been discontinued by the two organisations.

According to Nana Oye Lithur, their decision to discontinue the case was informed by the released of the applicant on March 31. This led the court to discontinue and struck out the case.

The two human rights organisations told The Statesman that they have filed a similar motion before the court concerning two other women being held at the Immigration Headquarters by the Ministry of Interior, which they would move on April 8.

The LRC and CHRI were seeking the court to order the Minister for Interior and the Inspector General of Police to produce the bodies of the persons in detention and also to justify their continued detention.

The case was held in the absence of the Attorney General or any of his representatives who were not in court. However, when the case was called Nana Obiri Boahene, the Minister of State at the Ministry of Interior told the court that although they were not a party in the suit they were served and hence this presence. He told the court that he was surprised that they were served.

According to the LRC and CHRI on March 17, Chucider Lawrence and about six hundred and thirty women and children were unlawfully arrested and detained at the Kodiabe Training Centre in the Greater Accra Region.

They pointed out that on March 22 some men from the Buduburam Refugee Camp were arrested, detained and subsequently deported the same day, and therefore they suspected that the same fate would fall their client.

They argued that initial arrest and subsequent detention beyond forty hours without recourse to the courts of the land is unlawful.
