Fire gutted the premises of Obedru Fishing Company Limited located on the premises of the former State Fishing Corporation Cold Store, in the early hours of Tuesday. |
Five officials said over 10,000 cartons of Poultry Products, fish and other property worth several thousands of Ghana Cedis were destroyed. There was however no casualty.
It took 27 firemen and five fire tenders from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) and the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR), about four hours to bring the fire under control.
Captain Owusu Koranteng, harbour master, told journalists that the security men at the fishing harbour reported the fire outbreak at the cold store and a fire tender was immediately sent to the scene.
He said for over 30 minutes they could not have access to the premises as it had been locked but they managed to douse the area with water to prevent the fire from spreading.
Captain Koranteng said the door eventually was forced open and joined by more personnel from the GNFS and TOR.
He said at a point the tenders run out of water and they resorted to the use of sea water.
The cause of the fire was not immediately known.
An eye witness told the Times that as soon as the fire was spotted an explosion was heard after which the fire spread to other parts of the building.
DSP Daniel Ansong Denkyi, commander of Railway, and Ports Police, said 20 policemen were brought in to guard the area to prevent looting.
