AMA Sub-Metros Closed Down

All the eleven sub-metros of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) have not been functioning since May, last year.
This is due to a court injunction placed on AMA after some members of the sub-metros took the Assembly to court for allegedly using Legislative Instrument (LI) 1615 to elect members of the sub-metros instead of using the amended LI 1804.

In view of this, the Metro Directors have taken over the functions of Chief Executives of the Sub-Metros as LI 1804 directs.

A credible source at AMA told reporter that LI 1804 which supersedes LI 1615 should be the legal directive to be used to elect members of the sub-metro and that under the LI 1804, Unit Committee members would now be eligible to be elected as members of the sub-metros.

The injunction came about when some of the sub-metros - Okaikoi North, Okaikoi South, Osu Clottey, Ayawaso East and Ayawaso Central - inaugurated their sub-metros under the old LI 1615 without unit committee members, prompting some members to take AMA to court.

The new LI had made provision for the election of 10 Unit Committee members to be selected rotationally, assembly members and councilors, all numbering 40, with Chief Executives at the helm of affairs.

Apart from the Chief Executive position, which would be a full time appointment with pay, there would also be a Deputy Chief Executive as well as Sub-Metro Chairmen.

The source further expressed hope that sanity would prevail for AMA to hold elections immediately under LI 1804 for the sub-metros to function.
