The Malian President, Amadou Toumani Toure, arrived in Accra yesterday for a three-day visit to the country. |
He was met on arrival at the Kotoka International Airport by President J.A. Kufuor, Vice-President Alhaji Aliu Mahama, ministers of state, the Chief of the Defence Staff, Lieutenant-General J.B. Danquah, the Inspector General of Police, Mr Patrick Kwarteng Acheampong, the Dean of the Diplomatic Corps and Malian Ambassador in Ghana, Mohammed Lamin Labat, as well as members of the African Diplomatic Corps.
As the aircraft carrying the visiting President taxied to a halt, he was welcomed at the foot of the gangway by his host, after which nine-year-old Gloria Arkoh of the Care Academy at Lapaz, Accra, presented him with a bouquet.
President Kufuor then escorted his guest to the dais for the national anthems of both Ghana and Mali with a 21 – gun salute in the background.
Thereafter, President Amadou Toure inspected a guard of honour mounted by three officers and 96 men from the First Battalion of Infantry under the command of Captain Alfred Martei with the Central Band of the Ghana Armed Forces in attendance.
President Toure exchanged greetings with dignitaries present after which he was driven to the Castle.
In brief remarks before the two presidents and their teams went into closed door bilateral talks, President Kufuor recalled the cordial relations between Ghana and Mali before Independence and stressed the need for it to be strengthened.
President Toure expressed gratitude to the government of Ghana for the invitation and said Ghana has seen tremendous transformation over the years under President Kufuor.
President Toure will today pay a day’s visit to Kumasi where a durbar will be held in his honour.
On his return to Accra, he will visit the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre.
Tomorrow he will visit the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum before leaving for home. |
