For the second time, this year, the world’s attention will be focused on Ghana as she plays host to delegates from 193 countries attending the 12th United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). |
It is expected that the UN Secretary-General and close to 4,500 representatives from all over the world will be in the country from tomorrow to April 25 for UNCTAD XII, which is on the theme: "Addressing the opportunities and challenges of globalisation for developments".
A statement issued by the Deputy Director of the Information Service Department, Mr James Amuah, prior to the official opening ceremony on April 20, said other activities are being held to precede the formal opening.
These activities include a flag-raising ceremony, a world investment forum and a civil society forum, all of which began on Thursday and will run until the end of the conference.
Aside the 4,500 delegates, seven heads of state have confirmed their participation at the meeting. They are the presidents of Brazil, Nigeria, Senegal, Turkey, Algeria, Finland and El-Savador.
According to the statement, there will be a high level event which will provide a unique opportunity for the heads of state and government, as well as corporate leaders, to explore the emerging international landscape.
"The forum will produce a position document that will be presented on April 21 to the opening plenary of the UNCTAD XII", the statement said.
The statement noted that the high-level discussion on April 21 would be devoted to Africa where the least developed countries are located.
The UN Secretary-General, Ban Kin Moon, will chair the session which would be moderated by UNCTAD Secretary-General Supachai Panitchpakdi, and "will reflect the importance attached to ensuring that African countries benefit more from globalisation."
Other activities lined up for the one-week conference include a roundtable discussion on "The changing face of commodities in the 21st century" on April 22 and on the following day, another discussion on "Creating an institutional environment conducive to increased foreign Investment and sustainable development."
