Put Nation Above Party - J.H. |
| The Chairman of the National Development Planning Commission (NDPC), Mr J.H. Mensah, has called on the leadership of the various political parties to be bi-partisan in their approach to issues of national importance when they assume the reins of government. |
He said that will enable the country to achieve middle-income status.
Mr Mensah was speaking on Saturday, at a three-day forum at Ho, organised by the NDPC under the theme: "Strategic options for consideration in the comprehensive national development plan".
The forum provided a platform for the political parties to, among other things, build consensus on strategic options for considerations in a long-term national development plan.
It also discussed how to mobilise the citizens behind the national development plan, and institutional arrangements that will ensure that the implementation of the plan continues irrespective of which political party is in power.
Mr Mensah urged leadership of the parties to endeavour to build consensus, particularly on how to restructure the economy, improve human capital resources, transform agriculture and launch the country into accelerated industrialisation to fasten the pace of its development.
"Politicians must be able to tell Ghanaians how to exploit the possibilities and opportunities available to them using Ghanaian expertise instead of relying on development partners to transform the economy," he noted.
He advised Ghanaians against dissipating their energy on issues of lack of resources and funds, and instead show commitment, dedication, sacrifice and explore new ways of doing things.
Mr Mensah, cited countries like Vietnam and Cambodia which went through difficult times through wars 20 years ago but which today, are prosperous countries, and said it become possible because of the change of the mindset of the people of these countries.
"Politicians in the country, must therefore, re-define the policy direction of the country to accelerate its socio-economic development," he stressed.
Dr Regina Adutwum, Director-General of the NDPC, said that no country can move ahead socially and economically without properly articulating its vision.
It was attended by, among others, the flag-bearer of the Democratic Freedom Party, Emmanuel Asante-Antwi, the National Chairman of the People’s National Convention, Alhaji Ahmed Ramadan, Dr Nii Moi Thompson of the Convention People’s Party and Mr Boakye Agyarko and Mr Yaw Osafo-Marfo who represented the New Patriotic Party.
The rest are Frances Esiem, Women’s Organiser of the DFP, John Thompson, acting Secretary of the Great Consolidated Popular Party and Francis Kyei of the Reformed Patriotic Democrat (RPD).
