40 ARRESTED... As NPP/NDC Youths Clash |
| More than 40 people were arrested yesterday at Changhi, a suburb of Tamale, following a clash between rival youth supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC). |
The clash is believed to be a spillover of an incident that occurred on Sunday at a night club involving two youths from the opposing sides over a girl.
Both sides caused damage to each other’s property. The NPP youth destroyed a canopy of the NDC and in retaliation, the NDC youth also vandalised plastic chairs of the NPP youth.
An eyewitness, Alaru Mumuni, told the Times that but for the prompt intervention of the police and the military, the confrontation would have spread to other suburbs.
He said that both sides of the political divide in Changli, a noted flash point, had been preparing for a possible show- down before security personnel arrived.
The Northern Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Inspector Albert Johnson, said the situation has been brought under control with the military and police patrolling the area.
He said those arrested will be screened and the culprits would be prosecuted, adding that security agencies are on the alert to deal with any group of persons who would attempt to foment trouble. |
