Three Police Officers have been hauled before an Accra High Court for allegedly robbing one Isaac Opoku of an amount of €12,000 and $1,800 at the Kotoka International Airport.
The accused persons, Detective Corporal Kwarteng Reynolds, General Lance Corporal Richard Dotsey Gablah and General Corporal Joseph Bowers, pleaded not guilty to two counts of conspiracy to commit crime and robbery before Justice Charles Quist, but were remanded in prison custody to re-appear on June 18, 2008.

Mrs. Amartey, a Chief State Attorney, told the court that on April 24, 2008 at about 9:00pm, the complainant, Isaac Opoku, a spare parts dealer, arrived at the departure hall of the Kotoka International Airport and whilst preparing to emplane to Italy, was arrested by Gablah and Kwarteng.

According to her, the two arresting officers claimed they received information that the complainant had swallowed some pellets of cocaine and without making entries in the station diary, drove to the airport in a BMW Saloon car with Togolese registration number, TG5163Z together with General Corporal George Haywoode of the Rapid Deployment Force (RDF).

She narrated that when they got to the airport, Kwarteng hinted Joseph Bowers, who was also there to see off some delegates who had attended the UNTAD XII about their mission, and he joined them.

Gablah and Kwarteng sent complainant to a point behind the Legon Police Station followed by Bowers in a State Protocol Official car, and the three forcibly collected the complainant’s Ghanaian passport and his €12,000 and $1,800 and after that, Bowers drove away in the State Protocol official car leaving behind Kwateng, Gablah, Haywoode and complainant.

The suspects, who allegedly gave complainant three cans of Lactosoy milk to enable him expel the substance he had swallowed, drove Isaac to Harold’s Lodge at Madina with the view to accommodating him for the expellation of the drugs but this did not materialise.

They then proceeded to Biney’s Bed and Breakfast Guesthouse at Osu-Re and secured room number 302 for Isaac but when they arrived, the complainant immediately raised alarm that the policemen were trying to kidnap him.

This attracted many people to the guesthouse, prompting the police to flee leaving him in the BMW car. The angry mob deflated the police car tyres.

That same day, a complaint was lodged with the Osu Police by the complainant. Kwarteng and Gablah, thinking they could be reported of their illegal activity, reported to the Cantonments Police Station that a crowd had attacked them with their car vandalized.

They were immediately assisted by General Sergeant William Asamoah Dartey and Frank Febri, both of the Cantonment Police Station, to the scene and the car was moved to the police station.
