Strange Box Lands At Aflao |
| A strange container which was discovered by local fishermen off the coast of Aflao and brought ashore has prompted a flurry of security activities. |
At the time of filing this report, security personnel were being awaited at the border town to take part in the scrutiny of the rusty container.
The local fishermen think the container contains drugs, but others suspect the contents might be toxic waste dumped on the high seas.
When contacted by Joy FM the Police District Commander for Ketu South, under which the border town is, said nothing can be said about the contents until the container has been opened, adding that adequate security measures were in place pending the arrival of experts from Accra.
The apprehension that the container which appeared to have been on the high seas for a long time could contain toxic waste or other dangerous materials, informed the security arrangements taken and the obvious flurry of activities around it.
The container bore a mark ‘SH’ but had nothing to point at its country of origin.
The Police Headquarters was immediately informed about the discovery.
Last year it would be recalled that fishermen on the beaches of Axim in the Western Region found floating white substances which turned out to be cocaine.
In Cote d’Ivoire dumped toxic waste made negative headlines in that country as fears of health problems caught the attention of the authorities.
Unscrupulous persons sometimes find it convenient dumping toxic waste on the high seas and with time these find their way to the beaches of the surrounding areas. |
