Seventy-eight percent of this number, it is said, have been involved in charitable or voluntary work, or undertaking extra-curricular activities linked to their professions.
The first list which was released on the New Year of 2008 was recommended by Prime Minister Gordon Brown and its goal was to pay tribute to outstanding achievement and service across the entire community.
Honours in the UK are normally awarded twice a year; a list is published on The Queen’s Birthday in June and another is published at the New Year.
In Ghana a list of 244 awardees including President J.A. Kufuor and ex-president J.J. Rawlings was released in June to award citizens who had excelled in various endeavours.
The National Awards in Ghana was instituted in July, 1960 by the first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.
