Reconsider GT Sale — Council |
| The Christian Council of Ghana has called on the government to reconsider its decision on the sale of 70 per cent of Ghana Telecom (GT) shares. |
The General Secretary of the council, Rev. Dr Fred Deegbe, said the government should consider the consequences of the sale on the development and growth of the country.
In a release issued in Accra, he stated that in as much as the council recognised the problem confronting the government in the operation of GT, the sale needed to be closely examined for the economic benefit of the country.
“Ghanaians need to know about the factors compelling the government to hand over the management of GT to foreigners,” Rev. Dr Deegbe said.
“Will the sale of this important state asset address the root causes of the problem and what will be the social, economic, and security implications on the lives of the ordinary Ghanaian?” he asked.
Rev. Dr Deegbe advised that it was necessary for the government to observe procurement procedures, as well as the conditions needed for the disposal of assets in the improvement of the living standards of the people.
He said the nation should reflect on past examples of the divestiture of state assets and the effect of negligence on the economic growth of the country.
“We cannot underestimate the importance of telecommunication in nation building, including intelligence gathering and national security, particularly as the world becomes more sophisticated and complex due to globalisation and the rapid changes in information technology,” he added. |
