EC Set For Reopening Of Register
Sample Image The Electoral Commission (EC) has distributed all the necessary materials to the regions in readiness for the registration of new voters which takes place from Thursday, July 31 to Sunday, August 10, 2008.
Currently, all the 2,500 digital workstations purchased by the EC for the forthcoming exercise have arrived.

The commission took delivery of the final consignment of 1,440 last Friday, July 25, 2008 and immediately dispatched them to the various registration centres. It had earlier received 1,060 workstations in three batches.

A workstation is made up of a digital camera, a printer, a power pack and a USB link cable.
The equipment was supplied by ENUS Enterprise, which had been contracted after a competitive bidding process.

The registration exercise is to allow Ghanaians who have attained the voting age of 18 and those who are above 18 but have never registered to do so.

Speaking to the Daily Graphic, the Chairman of the EC, Dr Kwadwo Afari-Gyan, urged all Ghanaians who qualified to register to come out and do so to make the exercise successful.

According to Dr Afari-Gyan, 5,000 electoral centres would be opened nationwide for the registration exercise.

He indicated that over the years one challenge the commission had faced concerned people who did not qualify, including the under-aged and non-Ghanaians, trying to register.

“Any of these people who attempt to register commits an offence, for which he or she can go to jail,” he declared.

Dr Afari-Gyan said the commission had instituted a facility called “A Challenge” to curb that difficulty.

He said if an unqualified Ghanaian or non-Ghanaian was challenged in the process of registration, a voters card would not be issued until the substantive matter had been resolved later by a committee made up of representatives of the political parties, the traditional authorities in the area, representatives of the police and the educational authorities, with a representative of the EC serving as the secretary to the committee.

“All things being equal, this year’s registration exercise will take off smoothly,” Dr Afari-Gyan assured Ghanaians.

He said different categories of personnel involved in the registration exercise, including registration supervisors and officers, as well as laminators, had already undergone training. Currently, the cameramen are receiving further training on the new workstations.
